Review : Mitsubishi WD-73727 73-Inch 1080p DLP HDTV
The marketplace is just filled with high-def tv choices nowdays and each choice has its ups and downs. Being a DLP means this set will be affected by the rainbow effect. Still, a really good initial setup should minimize that. I’m impressed by the wide variety of color adjustments this set boasts…rather than simply hue and tint you get individual color adjustments which should make for a very natural display when set up properly. As far as accepting or not accepting 1080p inputs is concerned it’s a non-issue right now since the Toshiba HD-DVD decks only put out 1080i and the Samsung Blu-Ray decks downcovert from 1080p to 1080i and then upconvert back to 1080p before sending the signal out…so neither of those devices sends a native 1080p signal out, anyway! Perhaps in a couple of years that will become a real issue, but for now it just isn’t. If that is the only thing stopping you from buying this set, REALLY the only thing, then you should probably buy it. It is going to upconvert whatever signal it receives to 1080p and you will see as good a picture from your hi-def dvd player as with any other set on the market since all 1080p is, at present, upconverted.

Because 1080p provides twice the resolution of the high definition 720p or 1080i displays found in most HDTVs today, you’ll get more vivid pictures–no matter the scene or content. Featuring a simple, clean design with a compact cabinet (at just 21.5 inches deep), the WD-73727 will fit into virtually any home theater furnishings without crowding the surroundings. It includes a wide variety of digital inputs (including two HDMI, three component, and two Firewire ports). It’s also digital cable ready with the integrated CableCARD slot and incorporates TV Guide’s On Screen program guide for easy viewing of what’s on today and seven days into the future.
It delivers stunningly bright and detailed images thanks to MitsubishiÕs proprietary 1080p DLP chip and the high-speed Plush1080p video processor (with a 6-segment, 10,800 RPM color wheel and a 150-watt lamp), which upconverts 1080i signals to 1080p producing four times the resolution of traditional line doublers. It also offers Mitsubishi’s DeepField imager, which dynamically optimizes brightness and contrast within every scene, as well as the SharpEdge feature for clean, focused edges between objects and scene backgrounds (see more about Mitsubishi’s exclusive set of video-enhancing technologies below).
The WD-73727 has a 1920 x 1080-pixel resolution, 16:9 aspect ratio, and compatibility with 480i/480p/720p/1080i video sources. It pumps out audio via its integrated 20-watt speaker system (10 watts per two channels) and also offers Mitsubishi’s Level Sound Dynamics Limiter features, which evens out the sound of programs–even during loud commercial breaks. It also includes a multi-format memory card reader, enabling you to display still photo slideshows and play digital music files (MP3 and WMA).
Other convenience features include color temperature controls, full-screen image freeze, two tuner picture-in-picture (PIP), split screen, six 4:3 aspect ratio and two 16:9 aspect ratio picture formats, channel labeling, V-Chip parental controls, and a sleep timer. The IEEE 1394 (also known as Firewire or i.Link) multimedia connection enables simple, low-cost, high-bandwidth real-time audio, video and data networking between a Mitsubishi TV and other consumer electronics products such as camcorders and DVHS VCRs. With IEEE 1394 compatible products and systems, users can record SD or HD digital video over a plug-and-play A/V network.
Proprietary Mitsubishi Features
This television includes several exclusive Mitsubishi technologies that enhance its picture as well as ease of use.
- Most important is Mitsubishi’s Plush 1080p collection of imaging technologies, which upconvert lower quality images from every video source–analog and digital broadcasts, DVD players, digital cable and satellite, game consoles–to HD quality. And for a 1080p HDTV like this model, even the high quality 720p and 1080i HDTV signals being broadcast need to be reformatted. The Plush 1080p feature set scales the picture precisely, with minimal side effects. And 1080i, currently the most common form of HDTV signal, is spectacular at 1080p.
- The Dark Detailer feature improves contrast ratio by more than four times, giving you a wide array of colors and shades that are essential for optimal viewing of dark, dramatic scenes while also providing maximum brightness.
- Rather than provide standard color and tint controls, Mitsubishi’s PerfectColor technology enables you to adjust the screen’s color palette with six independent color controls (magenta, red, yellow, green, cyan, and blue).
- The DeepField Imager constantly adjusts brightness and contrast for optimum settings in all areas of the picture. It can even optimize complex scenes containing both dark and bright areas. It analyzes 135 sectors of the picture in real time, then determines the optimum blend of contrast and brightness settings within the picture using advanced Mitsubishi algorithms. Based on picture analysis it dynamically adjusts for areas that are too high or low in contrast and/or too dark or bright.
- Finally, the ClearThought set of features includes all-digital audio output (which converts analog audio signals to digital audio) and the NetCommand single-remote control home theater operation system (which allows you to set up and control components using simple on-screen icons). It also provides the TV Guide On Screen 8-day program guide system, which makes it easy to sort through all the television listings to find your favorite channels.

A microdisplay television (also called DLP) typically offers a large screen with a cabinet that’s deeper than standard LCD and plasma screens, but far more compact than old-school cathode-ray television (CRTs). This rear-projection TV projects red, green, and blue light that’s filtered through a pixel-filled microchip color wheel and directed onto a digital micromirror device (DMD), a chip with millions of hinged, microscopic mirrors attached, which switches on and off up to 5,000 times a second. The reflected light is directed through a lens and onto a screen, creating an image. Unlike rear-projection CRT sets, all microdisplays can get quite bright without losing detail, so they’re perfectly watchable in brightly lit rooms.
HDMI is a lossless, uncompressed, all-digital audio/video interface to link any audio/video source (such as a set-top box, DVD player, or AV receiver) with your TV–all over a single cable. HDMI supports standard, enhanced or high definition video, plus multi-channel digital audio on a single cable. It supports all ATSC formats–standard (SDTV), enhanced (EDTV), and high (HDTV).
