Samsung LNS1952D 19-Inch LCD HDTV Monitor

Review : Samsung LNS1952D 19-Inch LCD HDTV Monitor

Don’t let the bad reviews for this TV on this site dissuade you from purchasing this beautiful TV. No, you’re not going to get a TV with an ATSC tuner for this low price. Samsung only puts those in the larger sets because smaller sets inherently have better pictures. I also have a 40″ Samsung with the ATSC tuner. Both beautiful TVs….

Despite the bad reviews on this site, I just bought a pair of these for my mother- and sister-in-law. They were so thrilled with the picture quality and sound, I am going to buy another one for my daughter.

Samsung PN50A650 50-Inch 1080p Plasma HDTV with RED Touch of Color

Review : Samsung PN50A650 50-Inch 1080p Plasma HDTV with RED Touch of Color

This showed up in my Gold Box in December (this is written in April; I wanted a chance to live with it for a while). Gee, I wonder how Amazon knew I wanted this very TV? :-) Price was fantastic, and White Glove delivery was great; the only hang-up–it was chilly on delivery day, and the guy couldn’t turn the set on to run down his checklist. No biggie, but it was hard to wait for the set to acclimate before getting the chance to turn it on. There aren’t enough good things to say about it. Touch of color is very subtle and the clear band around the edge of the bezel is cool. After dialing back the settings for a break-in period (say what you will, I felt better doing it), I calibrated the set and am still amazed at the picture. High Def sources are excellent (over-the-air and U-Verse’s HD signal). Even component 480p out of the DVD player looks great. No Blu-Ray yet; waiting for another Gold Box deal. The sound isn’t world class, but I knew that going in and have a very nice amp and speakers for when it matters. Love this set–not like, love!

Samsung LNT5265F 52-Inch 1080p LCD HDTV

Samsung LNT5265F 52-Inch 1080p LCD HDTV

Review : Samsung LNT5265F 52-Inch 1080p LCD HDTV

Samsung LNT5265F 52-Inch 1080p LCD HDTV Features

  • 1080P (Full HD)
  • 15,000:1 Contrast Ratio
  • Super Clear Panel
  • (3) HDMI, (2) Component Inputs
  • Swivel Stand

For people looking to step up to full 1080p resolution in a 52-inch flat-panel LCD, Samsung’s 2007 model LNT5265F is a good choice. Besides opffering full 1080p resolution the LNT5265F also features a 15,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio for rich blacks and subltle tecture display, an 8ms response time panel for smooth motion, hidden side speakers, an NTSC tuner, and 3 HDMI ports.

The Samsung Digital Natural Image engine (DNIe) Video Enhancer refines all analog NTSC and wideband video inputs for an overall improvement in picture quality. DNIe improves contrast, white level, picture detail and incorporates digital noise reduction to improve lower quality video inputs. The 3D Y/C digital comb filter constantly analyzes the three dimensions of picture height, picture width, and picture changes-over-time to dramatically reduce edge image artifacts while improving transition detail.

High-quality virtual surround sound can be experienced with just the speakers built into the TV. SRS TruSurround XT technology delivers an amazing, simulated 3D effect with clear dialog and powerful bass through hidden side speakers. TruSurround XT audio adds three audio enhancement technologies to produce an amazingly immersive sound experience.

  • Dialog Clarity brings movie dialog into Focus during the playback of any surround-encoded material to make speech much clearer and crisper.
  • TruBass creates incredible deep rich bass allowing a person to perceive significantly deeper, richer low bass tones that are far beyond the physical low frequency capabilities of the speaker itself.
  • The SRS WOW feature widens the soundstage by processing standard two-channel stereo material as well as multi-channel encoded material for a dramatic improvement in the playback of any stereo audio over a two-speaker system.

What’s in the box: Samsung LNT5265F 53-inch 1080P LCD TV, remote control, 2 AAA batteries, Power Cord, cleaning cloth, owners manual, warranty card.

Samsung PN58B650 58-Inch 1080p Plasma HDTV

Samsung PN58B650 58-Inch 1080p Plasma HDTV

Review : Samsung PN58B650 58-Inch 1080p Plasma HDTV

It has been a while since I wrote my last review on Amazon so in light of my recent purchase of this PN58B650 HDTV, I think now is a good time to put another review under my belt.

If you’re reading this review, you’re probably in the same boat I was in several weeks ago when I was shopping for a 55+” LCD/LED/Plasma HDTV. If you’re in the “should I get an LCD/LED or Plasma TV” mindset, read on. If you’re set on getting a Plasma and really care to just know more of what’s so great about this specific model, skip to the next paragraph. Yes, I was in the market for EITHER an LCD/LED or Plasma. During the many days I spent researching differences/advantages/disadvantages of LCD/LED versus Plasma, I came across a lot of pros and cons for both platforms. There are supporters and bashers of both and at the end of the day, it all comes down to personal preference. I’m not really going to go into the differences between the two platforms as there is a plethora of information on the Internet that goes into great details laying that down (just google ‘plasma vs lcd’). Instead, I’m going to give you my reasoning for going with Plasma. It is a known fact that LCD TVs exhibit a “blurring” of the image during fast motion. This is why all the different manufacturers out there have 120Hz and 240Hz models — and you pay a premium for these over the standard 60Hz LCD TVs. However, if you get the chance, go to your nearby electronics store and take a look at these 120Hz and/or 240Hz LCD TVs with a BluRay movie playing. (And be sure the 120Hz/240Hz is not turned off as there is a way to turn that off — which defeats the purpose of paying a premium for the feature in the first place). Observe how the movie doesn’t have that cinematic motion-picture feel. It looks a lot more like watching a TV show recorded with a camcorder, or commonly described as “the soap-opera” effect. Now watch that same BluRay movie on a Plasma screen… ahhh… doesn’t that look amazing! Okay, for me, that put me into the Plasma camp. Onto the PN58B650.

Knowing that I wanted to get a plasma TV and knowing that I wanted a tv 55″ or larger, my choices were limited to three manufacturers: LG, Panasonic, or Samsung (Pioneer had already exited the Plasma market by the time I was searching for a TV but still could be found in various places). I had previously owned a 42″ Panasonic Plasma TV and have read a lot of good things about the picture quality of the Samung Plasma TVs. Anyhow, to make a long story short, after some researching, I decided on getting one made by Samsung (but if you’re in the market for a Panasonic, the PN58B650 would be comparible to the higher-priced Panasonic TC-P58V10).

If a Samsung Plasma is one of the choices you’re considering, you’re probably comparing the various different Samsung 58″ plasma models: PN58B550, PN58B560, PN58B650, PN58B850 (not available through Amazon), and PN58B860. So many models to choose from in a 58″ from one manufacturer — it gets very confusing. So what the heck is the difference between the different models. As you can see, the last three numbers in the models indicate the major model differences — Samsung distinguishes the models as 5-series, 6-series, and 8-series. There are two each of the 5 and 8 series while there’s only the PN58B650 for the 6-series.

So why the PN58B650 over the others?

Since we’re purchasing a television, picture quality is the number one important feature/factor to consider. The 650, 850, and 860 all produce the same picture quality with the same level of contrast (3,000,000:1) and same color reproduction technology (Wide Color Enhancer 3 — which also gives you much more control in color calibration if you ever decide to professional color-calibrate your TV). All three also have a built-in Media Player (more on that later) and Internet-based widget “apps” (which I don’t really care for since I do all my Internet-related activities on my computer). The difference between the PN58B650 and the 8-series is the physical thickness of the units… 2.9″ vs 1.2″, respectively. The major difference between the 850 and the 860 model is that the 860 has a Crystal Full HD Engine with Cinema Smooth feature that enhances the smoothness of BluRay movies whereas the 850 does not. Here’s the kicker… the PN58B650 ALSO has that feature — so in comparing the PN58B650 to the PN58B860, it all comes down to whether or not you can live with a 2.9″ thick TV and save hundreds of dollars compared to the PN58B860 since feature-for-feature, these two are comparible. If money is no object, go for the thinner of the two!

Now many of you are probably comparing this PN58B650 to the lower-priced PN58B560 and PN58B550. The 5-series does lack quite a bit of features I just mentioned when comparing the PN58B650 to the 8-series. For starters, the overall picture quality won’t be quite as nice on the 5 series over the 6 or 8-series. The range of the contrast ratio on the 5-series is less (2,000,000:1) and the color reproduction is not quite as nice. Don’t get me wrong, though, the 5-series does still yield a stunning picture, nonetheless, and you definitely can’t go wrong. Next, the 5-series models also don’t have a built-in Media Player. Let me tell you why this is such a cool feature to have. I have various movies/video/photos/music stored on an external USB hard drive, which I normally play on my computer. Wouldn’t it be nice to play those directly on your new 58″ Plasma TV? Well, that’s where the built-in Samsung Media Player comes in. Simply plug your USB drive into the USB port of the PN58B650 (or the PN58B850/PN58B860) and the TV itself will read the movie/video, audio, photo you select from your USB drive, and play it directly on the TV (yes, the TV has a built-in hardware decoder). This is a feature the 5-series lacks. And finally, the 5-series units do not have Network connectivity. This may not be a feature needed by many people but again, if you had movies/video, audio, photos stored on your computer, you can simply stream it to the TV and have the TV play the media files directly off your computer’s hard drive!

After owning, using, and playing with all the different features of the PN58B650 for the last two weeks, I have been just amazed at the picture quality and features of this TV. I have watched four Blu-Ray movies on it (sooo sharp and the colors are so vibrant and true to life), played a couple different PS3 games on it, and watched various TV shows. I also plugged in a Western Digital 1TB USB hard drive directly into the TV’s USB port and watched a 1080P HD movie straight from the Hard Drive. It had no problems playing the file (the movie was 1920×1080 x264 encoded (~9000kbps video bitrate) and had a DTS soundtrack in an MKV container in case any of you were curious).

Now I’ve read in various reviews about how various Samsung Plasma TVs emit a buzzing noise (sort of like an electrical buzzing noise coming from the tv, not the speakers) but I’m happy to report that I have not noticed a buzzing noise (even when I mute the speakers) and I’ve used it for quite a number of hours.

I hope this review has helped you make a decision on your next big screen flat panel HDTV. Please click the “Yes” button below if you found my review helpful. :)

UPDATE (01/20/2010): In my review, I mentioned that I was able to play 1080P (1920×1080) MKV movies. Apparently, it seems the built-in Samsung Media Player in the Samsung TV will not allow you to fast forward or rewind MKV movies (though it will play them just fine). If you plan to transcode any of your home movies, be sure to transcode it to an MP4 container (instead of MKV) if you want the ability to fast forward or rewind through the movie.

Samsung HLT5076S 50-Inch UltraSlim 1080p DLP HDTV

Review : Samsung HLT5076S 50-Inch UltraSlim 1080p DLP HDTV

I bought this samsung DLP tv refurbished from secondact.com for 799 plus shipping. First impressions were that the picture through my xbox was beautiful (switched from crappy old 36 in sdtv). I can actually read the words on my games now :)

The second day I realized that I had the problem that a lot of people had. The screen was bowed or pincussioned… not sure which one. If there’s a perfect horizontal line on the screen, when it gets to either the left or right edge it goes up, creating a kind of smile shaped effect. I was immediately beside myself as I had just spent quite a bit of money on this tv.

The tv has a 90 day warranty from samsung so I began by calling their customer support. I called and got through to an easy to understand American representative very quickly and explained my problem. Even though it’s refurbished all i had to do was fax in my receipt and tomorrow I will be calling to set up an appointment for a technician to come directly to my house to fix this problem. I will update this after the tech comes to see what happens but the customer support from samsung was amazing and I love that i don’t have to ship out my tv somewhere and not get it back for a month as other manufacturers might.

If that gets fixed perfectly the only thing wrong with this tv is the audio. If turned up to normal to high-normal listening range it has a definite buzz, which the technician may also fix when he gets here. This isn’t a huge deal to me because for the price i payed i wasn’t looking for great audio without getting outside speakers anyways.

If on a budget this is a great tv to get as i see it!
GREAT CUSTOMER SERVICE

Samsung PN58A650 58-Inch 1080p Plasma HDTV with RED Touch of Color

Review : Samsung PN58A650 58-Inch 1080p Plasma HDTV with RED Touch of Color

Pro’s:
This was my best purchased on-line so far. I’ve researched this TV for several months. I believe I did almost a year of researching before I decide to buy this TV. Since I didn’t need to replace my current set I took my time and did my investigation for the best fit for me and my family. I love the colors and the sharpness of the picture. Consumer Reports gave the 50″ model high praise and mention that they didn’t review the 58″ but determine that the results shouldn’t be any different. So I went for the 58″. Oh baby did it pay off! Since the prices of movie tickets went up I decided that a 58″ would be better for watching DVD’s and it would feel more like a movie theater. Just like being at the movies. I haven’t even tried the High Definition yet and I’m still blown away. Watching the March Madness on this TV is nothing short of spectacular. The blacks are as good or even better than reported. The fast motion is not jittery or boxy like you would get with a LCD’s at that size. Going thru Amazon was also a great experience. The truck drivers that delivered the set said “Oh, you got this from Amazon, so you get the grade A delivery service”. They helped me unwrap the box. Had me closely inspect it and we turned it on to confirmed it was working. They would have taken the box but they recommended that I keep the box just in case I had to return it within the 30 days.

Cons:
The only thing I can say is that I don’t like the mute button feature. When you mute the sound you get a speaker display that won’t disappear and scrolls up and down the side of the screen. It is totally annoying. The remote is cool but I am not too crazy about it. Too big and not that smartly designed but if those are the only complaint’s I really can’t complain.

Conclusion:
I’ve been to several big name stores and was able to see this TV up close. The best price was ,800.00. Eat your heart out retailers, I got this great system for as little as ,920.00 total. That includes shipping and taxes.

Samsung LN46B650 46-Inch 1080p 120 Hz LCD HDTV with Red Touch of Color

Samsung LN46B650 46-Inch 1080p 120 Hz LCD HDTV with Red Touch of Color

Review : Samsung LN46B650 46-Inch 1080p 120 Hz LCD HDTV with Red Touch of Color

I set out to get the best 46″ LCD that I could get at the best possible price. After a lot of reading reviews online and visiting 5 stores and comparing all their LCDs, I narrowed in on Samsung LN46B640 (sure the 650 and 750 were better, but not at the price being asked for). Compared this model with Sony’s V, W and XBR series as well. Just when I was ready to take this set home, a representative from a store alerted me to the performance of the plasma sets (he was not aware of my budget, likes/dislikes and my decision to get the specific LCD). Plasma? Are they not dead? Is the new thing not about LCDs and LEDs? Sure it is and they are just as great. However I now spent 5 hours in 1 hour sessions to compare a plasma set – Panasonic TC-P46S1 with my favorite LCD TV Samsung LN46B640. After looking at 5 different feeds (TV source material/channels) in 5 different stores, I was convinced that the Plasma set performed a little better and provided better color accuracy. Dark and natural green on plasma against Neon green on LCD. Snow on mountains was natural on plasma compared to a Clorox white on LCD. The LCD was indeed good and provided a little better clarity but colors on Plasma were natural. I even changed the settings on the LCD to bring to the same color accuracy of the plasma but could not. LCD presented what I wanted to see, while the plasma set presented it more close to the natural color. On a dark background, the plasma offered colors that popped, while the same colors on the LCD faded. I compared this with the 640, 650, 750 and Sony TVs I mentioned. You will find many websites that tell you that burn-in problem on Plasma is no longer an issue and power consumption gap has also been narrowed down. For my usage power consumption was not a factor. Life of the set is also not an issue any more. Dynamic Contrast ratio and refresh rates, the two most talked about measurements are as follows for the ones I looked at; Plasma: 2 Million:1 and 640 hertz, LCD: 80K:1 and 120hz. Again Dynamic Contrast ratio is very subjective term and you should trust your judgment when comparing models. Its only recently that the LCD sets are catching up to the plasma on the two specs, while the plasma is catching up with the LCD on the power consumption spec. Before you get carried away with these terms, see how it matters to your viewing. In the end, I purchased the Panasonic TC-P46S1 at 0 less than the LCD. However I would not have thought twice if I had to pay the same price for the plasma as the LCD. Reason behind writing this is, do not take any technology for what is being churned out by the marketing machines, media and the hype. Trust your eyes and experience only. If you are reading this, you are reviewing one of the models I had short listed. I am sure whatever you buy will be the best model and in the end your own considered decision. Good Luck.

Samsung LN-S2338W – 23″ LCD TV – widescreen – 720p – HDTV

Samsung LN-S2338W - 23

Review : Samsung LN-S2338W – 23″ LCD TV – widescreen – 720p – HDTV

I went ahead and bought this set at Costco for 5 with a coupon and with the 100% satisfaction guarantee after talking to the video guy there. I had been using an older 20″ Toshiba flat screen CRT which was allright for getting the 360 system up and running. I decided to try this after finding out Microsoft used this same hdtv to demo their XBOX 360 launch last year. I plugged the Samsung in and connected the HDMI and setup the XBOX for HDTV at 720p and it was super easy. Worked right the first time with no hair pulling episodes. I had tried the game Gears of War on the old Toshiba and wasn’t happy with it or the graphics. But, now after playing it on the Samsung, all I can say is WOW!!!! This is the perfect TV monitor for gaming. All the games, TDU, COD2 & 3, etc, are sooooo much better now. The AV connections are on the back of the tv, which I personally like and you can also use this tv as a PC monitor since it has that connection also. My next upgrade is to get a Klipsch 2.1 GMX sound system with powered sub-woofer for this bad boy. You can get a lot of advice from techies about tuner pixel refresh rate and all of that stuff, but take it from your average user, if you’re looking for an all around great HDTV/gaming/PC monitor, this is the one that I recommend even being the SONY guy that I am.

Samsung LNT2353H 23-Inch LCD HDTV

Review : Samsung LNT2353H 23-Inch LCD HDTV

This is a great tv for the price. It is not the biggest thing, but perfect for the bedroom. The delivery was fast and it arrived in one piece. I have no complaints. The only thing that I didn’t like about the tv is that the picture gets dark when you are not viewing from directly in front. But that is the price you have to pay for a lcd and not a plasma.

Overall, great tv, great quality, great service. I would definitely purchase from this source again.
